Starlink Mobile and Qualcomm: What a Possible Fourth Carrier Could Mean for Your Business

By All Posts

On November 4, 2026, CNBC reported that SpaceX signed a multiyear deal with Qualcomm to provide network technology for Starlink Mobile, SpaceX’s U.S. mobile service. Starlink Mobile is trying to take on Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile. Here’s what we know, and what it could mean for your business phone and wireless plans.

What was announced

Qualcomm will supply its Dragonwing cellular infrastructure hardware and software for base stations, the equipment on cell towers, to give Starlink Mobile high-capacity ground coverage. Qualcomm said the deal is its largest 5G initiative to date. The ground network is meant to “complement Starlink’s satellite capabilities,” with rollout planned to begin next year. Financial terms were not disclosed.

According to CNBC, SpaceX plans tens of thousands of new cell sites but hasn’t named tower partners or said how many new towers it may need. Last month SpaceX also announced an agreement to buy a nationwide portfolio of 800 MHz spectrum. The Washington Post has reported SpaceX is in talks to acquire EchoStar’s Boost Mobile; that is a report, not a done deal.

Why it matters: a possible fourth option

Today most businesses choose among three national wireless carriers. If Starlink Mobile builds out a full network, it could become a fourth. That is a possibility, not a certainty. Building a national network takes time, and coverage and pricing haven’t been announced.

If it happens, here is what business owners could see:

  • More choice. Another carrier means another quote when your contract comes up, and possibly different plan structures.
  • Pricing leverage. More competition tends to give buyers more room to negotiate. CNBC noted that SpaceX’s spectrum news last month sent carrier shares down, a sign the industry is paying attention.
  • Coverage and backup. A network that pairs towers with satellites could be useful for rural sites, field crews, and as a backup line if your main carrier goes down. Today, CNBC notes, satellite-to-phone service alone can’t match the full voice, video and data coverage of the major carriers, which is exactly the gap the towers are meant to fill.

What to do now

Nothing drastic. Don’t break a contract over a network that hasn’t launched. But it’s a good time to:

  1. Know when your current wireless and phone contracts end.
  2. Note which locations have weak coverage or no backup connection.
  3. Avoid locking into very long terms without reviewing options.

Copper landlines are being retired. A few dates to know:

AT&T and Frontier copper landline shutdown dates for Florida businesses
  • Nov 5: FCC-authorized date for AT&T to stop certain business lines (PrimePath and some Business Local Exchange lines) in 34 states + DC, including Florida.

  • Nov 16: Frontier (now part of Verizon) is discontinuing copper-based services in Florida under its state tariff, except Lifeline, with a transition period.

Holiday scams are hitting business inboxes early this year.

Between now and New Year’s, expect fake shipping notices, vendor invoices with “new” bank account details, and texts that look like they came from the owner asking someone to grab gift cards fast. AI is making these messages cleaner and harder to spot.

A few simple rules stop most of it:

  • Never change payment details because of an email. Call the vendor at a number you already have on file.
  • Nobody on your team buys gift cards because of a text or email. Put that in writing.
  • Track packages on the carrier’s own website, not from a link.
  • Turn on multi-factor sign-in for email, banking, and payment accounts.
  • Make it easy for staff to report a suspicious message without getting in trouble.

If you’d like a second set of eyes on your business email security, phones, or backups before the busy season, that’s what I do. Your Choice Technology & Telecom works with businesses only, no residential.
